Diego Costa and Eden Hazard have made the headlines for rediscovering their untouchable 2014-15 form – when the Blues last clinched the title – while ‘role players’ Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses have thrived and suddenly look like world-beaters on the wing.

Meanwhile, across London, second-placed Tottenham are Chelsea top challengers, with Harry Kane and Dele Alli have been the big names once more under Mauricio Pochettino.

But in both instances, spare a thought for the unsung heroes, for without them, you can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn’t be in such strong positions this term.

We’re talking about N’Golo Kante and Victor Wanyama, of course…

While the former Leicester man has caught the eye once more for his dynamic, tireless style of play - mostly due to Chelsea's storming season and reigning champions Leicester's comparative struggles - it's fair to say his impact is still under-hyped.

And it's the same with Kenyan former Southampton hard-man Wanyama, whose efforts fly under the radar, but without them Spurs would more than likely be languishing outside the top four.

If you're still skeptical, just take a look at the pair's statistics for the season...

It comes as no surprise to see Chelsea and Tottenham have the BEST defensive records in the league this season, conceding 17 and 16 respectively, well clear of the rest of the top four - Manchester City and Arsenal - on 29 and 28 apiece.

While their attacking forces have both also performed admirably, you know the old saying: Defence wins titles.

And if Chelsea or Tottenham clinch the Premier League crown this term, they know who to thank...
