Liverpool yesterday trashed Spartak Moscow seven nil to ease to the champions League round of sixteen for the first time since 2008/2009 season. Captain of the night Philipe Coutinho scored a hat trick while Sadio Mane chipped in with a brace.

There were also goals from Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool's journey through Group E had already shown us the best and worst of them. They scored three in the first half at Sevilla recently but still drew the game.

So Liverpool had to win on Wednesday to top the group and draw to make sure they went through to the next round. So, in theory, it could have been a nervy affair.

Instead it was 90 minutes of gilded Liverpool football, a night Spartak were embarrassed and dismantled by the kind of devastating passing play that is only possible when you are blessed with a certain kind of player.

Elsewhere, Manchester City suffered their first defeat in twenty nine games as they lost 2-1 to Shaktor Donestk while Tottenham finished unbeaten in group stages after beating Apoel Nicosia three nil at Wembley.

Elsewhere Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in all of his team's Champions League group matches in a season as the holders beat Borussia Dortmund 3.2 at Santiago Bernabeu.
