Defending champions Real Madrid have been knocked out of the champions league after they were trashed 4-1 by Ajax Amsterdam in the return leg of the round of sixteen at Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid who led 2-1 from the first leg found themselves trailing two nil and 3-2 on aggregate after twenty minutes, thanks to goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres.

Madrid showed some improvement after the break but it was Ajax who added the third goal through Dusan Tadic and minutes later Real reduced the deficit to 3-1 thanks to Marco Asensio goal.

However Ajax responded immediately through Lasse Schone stunning free kick to pick a 5-3 aggregate win.

The bigger they come they harder they fall. After 1011 days as Champions League holders the 13-times winners Real Madrid came crashing down.

Elsewhere, Tottenham eased to quarter finals after beating Borussia Dortmund one nil to win four nil on aggregate courtesy of a Harry Kane goal.
