With heavy rains pounding all over the country Kenyans definitely wish that today was a national holiday so that they can sit with their feet up in the comfort of their homes.

It is not only unfavourable weather conditions that see Kenyans request the government to grant them a national day but also outstanding achievements by Kenyan individuals in and out of our borders.

It is in keeping up with exemplary citizens of our motherland that Kenyans had a reason to celebrate and toast to the success of one of their own after Harambee Stars captain and defensive midfielder par excellence, Victor Wanyama, captained Southampton for the first time ever in a Capital One match against Aston Villa which was played at the St. Mary's Stadium.

Wanyama was accorded the honour by Southampton manager Ronald Koeman after regular captains Jose Fonte and Kelvin Davis were left on the bench.

There is no denying that the Dutchman's decision to give him the armband has more than underlined his importance to the Southampton squad as he as his renewed trust in him seeing that Wanyama was pushing for a move to Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of the season.

The former Celtic player's patriotism is there for all to see each time he plays as he does so wearing a wristband and shinguards which are decorated with the colours of our republic. Him wearing the captain's armband just inches above his trademark wristband saw Kenyan football fans engulfed with a sense of pride that was as immense as the performance he put to lead his team to a 2-1 victory.

As soon as the Southampton line up was released and it came to everyone's notice that Wanyama was going to captain the Saints, the buzz and excitement on the Kenyan blogosphere was in every way understandable.
