The incident which was confirmed by the District Criminal Investigations Officer Collins Wekesa happened at 10:00 am on Wednesday.
Wekesa said the Deputy Governor Dr. Eliud Mate had just arrived in his homestead at Kinoru stadium area and when he was alighting from his vehicle his bodyguard Kipyegon confronted him and picked a bag which had Sh3.5 million.
“The two struggled but the bodyguard removed his pistol and aimed at the deputy governor who ran for his safety. During the Commotion the bodyguard left his shoes and disappeared”, he said.
He added that the officer is a police constable attached to the Administration Police camp at Marimanti South.
He added that the Deputy Governor alleged the money was part of the proceeds he had made after selling off his shamba at Kathwana in Tharaka Nithi.
The scene was visited by a top security delegation from Meru including the flying squad elite who have begun investigations and a manhunt for the suspect is in progress.
