Chiefs and their assistants have been urged to arrest any boda boda rider found flouting traffic rules within their locality.

The Meru county traffic commandant Vincent Okoth has also called on the owners of the many boda bodas which were impounded and are lying idle at the Meru police station after they failed to claim them failure to which they will be auctioned.

Okoth said the boda bodas will be auctioned at a throw away price by the government because they can not continue keeping them.

Okoth who was accompanied by the Meru county municipality assistant county commissioner George Maina issued the directive to the chiefs and their assistants arrest the riders flouting the traffic law in order to contain the many rising cases of accidents.

They said they have realized that many riders flout the law in the rural areas because they know there is no police officer to arrest them at the reserves.

They were addressing the administrators and the boda boda riders at Gitimbine shopping centre in Meru town when they cited motor cycle riders in rural areas for carrying excess passengers and luggage and not wearing helmets or reflector jackets.

"We have directed the chiefs and their assistants to arrest any boda boda rider flouting any traffic law in their locality. Let them also impound the boda boda and bring them to the police station to enable us prosecute the culprits," said Okoth.

He said the move will bring sanity and order to the boda boda industry.
