Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma wants Kenyans not to worry about their travel to Russia for World Cup tournament.
He said the forum has given him and other colleagues an opportunity to interact with world leaders and further national interest.
Kaluma said they have involved in a meeting with the tournament Head of Mission and assessed their aptly capacity in games and world geopolitics.
“There should be no cause of an alarm over Kenyan leaders going to Russia. Experience obtained here should be applied to better our sports and develop the Kenya,” Kaluma said.
Kaluma is among the 20 MPs and Senators who travelled to Russia to watch the ongoing World Cup tournament.
Most Kenyans have criticized the legislators for lavishly spending public resources at the expense of poor Kenyans.
But speaking to the Star on Friday, Kaluma defended their move, saying majority of them who are members of Bunge Sports Club gained a lot from the trip.
“The trip was timely because members gained a lot. In fact from here, we’ll be proceeding for East Africa Community Parliamentary games,” Kaluma said.
The MP noted that they also met some Kenyan students, assessed study opportunities available in Russia and the challenges they need to address to better them.
Kaluma also argued that most legislators who travelled to Russia have consistently attended the world cup tournaments from before they were elected and are continuing the tradition.
“I will not put a limitation to matters that interest me as a person unless they clash with my other public engagements, which is not the case now since Parliament is in recess,” he said.
The legislator further said Kenyans should not condemn them so much on grounds that many leaders including presidents travelled to Russia.
“The world is now a global village,” he said.
