We are celebrating Mothers day for its 19th consecutive year, all thanks to the original idea of a woman named Ann Jarvis.
Anna remembered, as a young girl, hearing her mother often repeat a simple prayer: ‘I hope and pray that someone, some time, will found a memorial mother’s day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life.
Anna Jarvis' mission to found Mother’s Day stemmed from a desire to pay tribute to her late mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis.
Ann's mother died on May 9th, 1905, and the daughter remembered her mothers wish to have the day honor all mums.
She began campaign in her hometown of Georgia USA, and eventually the then President caught wind of her campaign and signed a bill recognizing it as a national holiday.
The holiday’s design was thus a tribute to Mrs. Jarvis,” says Katharine Antolini, and author of the book .
Ann Jarvis soon after began to resent the day after it became commercialized with corporates pushing messages of loving your mother buy buying flowers and other gifts.
Ann sadly tried to campaign even more of the humbleness of the day, but her efforts could not counter what companies at the time were doing.
She was so upset she began anti mothers day campaigns protesting near florists and other marketers. She was arrested severally
Things were getting out of hand by this time that Ann Jarvis organized a petition to rescind Mothers day.
Sadly her activism failed to change the industry or people's minds, and later she was admitted into a sanitarium
According to Olive Ricketts, director of the Anna Jarvis Museum, people connected with the floral and greeting card industries paid to keep her in the sanitarium (an establishment for the medical treatment of people who are convalescing or have a chronic illness).
