AUDIO: "I Would Have Played For West Brom," Former Harambee Stars Goalkeeper James Siang'a Says

James Siang'a.

Victor Wanyama's distinction as the first and only Kenyan to feature in the top level of the English football league would have never come to pass had West Bromwich Albion managed to get the signature of Harambee Stars goalkeeper James Siang'a back in 1968.

Fresh from winning the FA Cup that year after defeating Everton 1-0 in the final, West Bromwich toured Kenya where they played an exhibition match against Harambee Stars.

The Stars goalkeeper on that day was 21-year-old James Siang'a who impressed the Europeans with his goalkeeping skills.

So impressed were West Brom that they wanted to take him with them back to England but his mother stood in the way of what would have been a historic and lucrative move for Kenya's first shot-stopping superstar.

Speaking to Radio Jambo presenter Yusuf Kaona on the Kamusi Ya Wachezaji segment of the World Of Sports show on Sunday, the former Gor Mahia coach said his mother was not comfortable with him going to England because he was her only son.

Listen to Siang'a narrating that incident in the audio clip below.
