Portugal were forced to play the better part of the match without their captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who was stretched off, due to an injury. Both sides settled for a barren draw in normal time forcing the match into extra time.
The match remained goalless after the first fifteen minutes of extra time, but former Swansea forward Eder struck with eleven minutes to stoppage to hand Portugal their first major trophy. France will live to blame themselves for missing several clear cut chances.
