It is a win that elated record try scorer Collins Injera who said; "We wanted to keep focus as Australia are a quality side. We stood up and got the win. Today was very windy, the toughest I have had here since my debut in 2006."
Shujaa were impressive right from the start as Samuel Oliech opened the scoring with a second minute try that was successfully converted by Eden Agero. Collins Injera extended his scoring prowess with a fifth minute try with Agero hitting the conversion good for a 14-0 lead.
On resumption, the two sides battled for four minutes without reaching each other's try-line before Billy Odhiambo struck for the winners, with Agero falling in his conversion attempt to leave the scores at 19-7.
Dylan Pletsch lifted the Australians with a try but Stannard this time missed as the Kenyans held on to their lead at stroke of full time. Play continued and Mick Adams added another try for the losers as they closed the gap to just two points but Stannard missed the conversion attempt, again, with the last strike of the match as Kenya celebrated a hard-fought win.
Kenya have been placed in a tough pool ahead of this weekend's Sydney IRB Seven leg.
Shujaa face Wellington Sevens winners and perennial continental rivals South Africa in pool 'A' which also has England and Japan.
The Kenyans start against England on Saturday 1:38pm before taking on South Africa 6:15pm and Japan 2:51pm in subsequent matches.
