It’s impossible to avoid the Cristiano Ronaldo narrative when looking back on Euro 2016.

From start to finish, the Real Madrid man seemed to be living his own private movie, with the competition as a subtext.

From criticizing Iceland’s tactics to throwing a reporter’s mic into a lake, Ronaldo was always a focal point, and the Ronaldo story took on a new dimension during the final, when he took on the role of manager from the sideline.

Having been injured in the first half, Ronaldo took it upon himself to manage the team from the sideline, much to the admiration of his fans.

But one man was not impressed – and when it comes to Portugal, this man carries clout.

In an interview with Portuguese channel Sport TV, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was critical of Ronaldo’s antics, insisting that his former player ‘contributed nothing’ to the team’s win with his extravagant sideline show.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t contribute anything during the final minutes of Euro 2016. It was the 11 players on the pitch, and the one directing the players was the manager (Santos). I see it as a spilling of emotion from someone who could see that there were just a few minutes remaining to reach an objective.’

Mourinho also says Ronaldo ‘lost control’, but says that ‘isn’t so bad.’
