The family of CORD leader Raila Odinga has announced that it will hold a memorial for their late son Fidel Odinga on January 30.

The memorial service will be held together with the commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the death of Raila's father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who died on January 20 1994 at the age of 83.

The event will be held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo town, Siaya county.

Fidel Odinga passed on January 4 last year at his home in Karen after a night out with friends.

Fidel, who had long been seen as the heir to his father's throne, was Raila's eldest son and he passed on at the age of 42.

He was survived by a wife, Lwam Bekele, and one son, Allay.

In a press statement, which can be read in full below, the family paid tribute to Fidel and thank everyone who stood by them during their time of grief.

One year has now gone by.

You are sadly missed but fondly remembered by your parents Raila Odinga and Ida Odinga, your wife Lwam and your darling son Allay, your siblings Rosemary, Raila Jr, Yvonne and Winnie, your nieces Saphie and Senayi, uncles, aunties, cousins and all your relatives and friends.

We the Odinga family would like to thank all those who stood with us during our long year of grief, following the loss of our dear Fidel.

We welcome all to a memorial service for Fidel and the 22nd anniversary of Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga on Saturday January at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Bondo Town, Siaya county.

"We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you unconditionally, in death we do the same."
