Mbwa mwitu! Church leader helped his victim procure an abortion

A church leader was yesterday charged with two counts of defilement in a Meru court.

Charles Koronya, 35, was accused of defiling an 11-year-old girl. He was also charged with having an indecent act with a minor.

Koronya is an official at Ruiri Deliverance Church in Buuri sub-county. He committed the offence on December 19 last year.

Prosecutor James Kinyua said Koronya helped the girl procured an abortion on February 1.

Koronya denied the charges before resident magistrate Edward Tshimonjero.

His lawyer, Audrey Mbijiwe, asked the court to release Koronya on a lenient bond, saying it was his client's constitutional right.

He asked the magistrate to order the prosecution to supply copies of charge sheets and all documents they intend to rely on during trial.

A report from Meru Referral Hospital said the girl was impregnated.

Tshimonjero released Koronya n a Sh400,000 bond with a surety of similar amount.

Koronya was arrested when he surrendered to police at Tutua police station.

The case will be heard on April 4 and 10.
