Child Trafficking: Newborn stolen from Nairobi dies in Naivasha hospital

A one day old baby suspected to have been stolen from Nairobi and taken to the Naivasha Sub County Hospital for treatment has died.

Naivasha Sub County Police Commander John Kwasa said the 28-year-old woman who was arrested after allegedly stealing the baby, was in custody.

The suspect who lives in Kayole estate in Naivasha was arrested after she went to Naivasha sub-county hospital to seek medical services for the minor who had problems in breathing.

The Commander confirmed the incident adding that woman had recorded a statement and confessed that she was not the biological mother.

Kwasa added that there was possibility of a case of child trafficking involving some health workers and unscrupulous traders.

The woman gave contradicting statements over the status of the minor forcing the hospital management to seek the intervention of the police.

“We have gone to court seeking more time to hold the suspect so that we can get to the bottom of this queer incident,” he added.

The senior police officer added that they would be recording more statements from the suspect’s husband before deciding what charges to prefer to the woman.

According to the source, initial investigations indicated that the woman had bought the baby for Ksh 50,000 of which she had paid part of the money.

“The information we are getting is that this woman has for years tried to get a baby without any success and she bought the minor from one of the estates in Nairobi for Sh50,000,” added the source.
