'This is a fantastic opportunity and I don't want to waste it': Torreira confirms he'son his way to Arsenal ahead of £25m move

Lucas Torreira has confirmed he is on his way to Arsenal for a medical.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder shone during Uruguay's World Cup campaign, helping his nation to the quarter-finals before their exit against on Friday afternoon.

And his current team, Sampdoria, agreed a £25million fee with Arsenal for a transfer during the competition in .

Even so, Torreira held off on completing a deal until after the end of the World Cup.

But he admitted on Sunday evening that he was going to rush to London to finalise the deal rather than return to his country to celebrate their campaign.

He told : 'I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my team-mates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it.'

Torreira is likely to become Unai Emery's fourth signing as Arsenal manager since joining at the start of the summer.

The former PSG and Sevilla boss has already snapped up goalkeeper Bernd Leno, defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and Soktratis Papasthathopoulous.

He has spent the last three seasons at Sampdoria after coming through the academy at Pescara.

Emery's first game in charge of Arsenal will be the pre-season game against Atletico Madrid on July 26.
