John Obi Mikel learned his father had been kidnapped and would be shot hours before playing Argentina

John Mikel Obi was told his father had been kidnapped in Nigeria and would be shot if authorities were informed, only four hours before he captained his country in their 2-1 defeat by Argentina in the World Cup on June 26.

After being informed by a family member on the bus to the stadium, Mikel chose not to confide in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) so as not to distract his team ahead of a decisive World Cup match.

Police freed his father, Pa Michael Obi, on Monday, but he is now in hospital after being tortured by his captors.

‘I played while my father was in the hands of bandits,’ Mikel told The Guardian. ‘I had to suppress the trauma. I took a call four hours before kick-off to tell me what had happened.

‘I was emotionally distraught and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play.

‘I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody. I also did not want to discuss it with the coach (Gernot Rohr) because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to him or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game.’

Mikel praised police for their efforts in securing the release of his father.

‘I thank the police authorities for their rescue efforts and the support I’ve received from friends and family members.

‘Unfortunately, my dad is now in hospital receiving emergency treatment as a result of the torture he received during his capture.’

Mikel’s father has been kidnapped before, in 2011, and was held for 10 days in the city of Kano. When he was freed, he said he had been ‘beaten mercilessly’.

Nigera lost the match to Argentina 2-1 at the Saint Petersburg stadium and went out of the World Cup. Mikel played the full 90 minutes.

World Cup 2018: Argentina To Tackle France As Croatia Book Weekend Date With Denmark

Marcos Rojo’s late volley sent Argentina through to the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup with a dramatic 2-1 victory  over Nigeria. Disjointed Argentina were on the verge of an embarrassing exit, before Rojo’s 86th minute winner spared them blushes, after Victor Moses had cancelled out Lionel Messi’s first half opener from the spot.

The other group D match saw Croatia beat debutants Iceland 2-1 to finish top with nine points, five ahead of runners-up Argentina.

Milan Badelj and Ivan Perisic scored for the Croats while Gylfi Sigurðsson pulled one back from the spot. Meanwhile, France played to a barren draw with Denmark to top group C with seven points two more than runners-up Denmark .

Another match saw Peru beat Australia 2-0 for their first victory in the tournament in 40 years, as the Aussies crushed out. France will play Argentina while Croatia will tackle Denmark in the last 16 knock out this weekend.

Video/Photos : Argentina legend Diego Maradona treated by medical staff after rollercoaster of emotions

Fears for the health of Argentina’s legendary No 10 Diego Maradona have eased after he had appeared to collapse into a chair after a night of bizarre behaviour while watching the national team’s qualification for the round of 16.

The 57-year-old was seen being helped from his seat in the stadium before collapsing into a chair. He was immediately attended to by Russian paramedics but despite reports that he had been taken to hospital, Maradona left the stadium himself. Low blood pressure is thought to have caused the momentary scare.

A night of bizarre behaviour from the man who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup – a feat they have not repeated since – began with him grabbing a woman to dance with in the executive seats before the game. He seemed to be out of control when Messi’s opening goal went in.

Maradona looked increasingly the worse for wear each time the camera panned to him, swearing and giving insulting hand gestures.

Video then emerged on social media after the game of Maradona appearing to need help back into VIP area, looking unsteady on his feet, and a picture showed him being treated by two members of medical staff.

According to Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Maradona was treated for a ‘few minutes’, but was then able to leave the stadium normally.

The near 30-second clip showed the former Napoli striker being carried into his own personal box, appearing to be on the verge of collapse.

Another video appeared in which Maradona appeared unwell as he watched the game, before turning to the camera and giving a woozy grin and thumbs up.

ccording to Argentinian broadcaster TyC Sports, paramedics were called to take his blood pressure. A picture showed two medics tending to the former footballer in the VIP area at the St Petersburg Stadium.

However he was given the all clear, and just after 1am Colombian journalist Patricia Villegas posted a picture to Twitter of Maradona preparing to fly back to Moscow.

Maradona had stolen the show during Argentina’s 2-1 victory on Tuesday evening, Marcos Rojo scoring a late winner, but for all the wrong reasons.

He leaned over the glass barrier in his VIP box to goad supporters below swearing at them and screaming as he was hugged by those in his area.

Speaking on the BBC’s coverage of the game, pundit Rio Ferdinand led the criticism of his antics. He said: ‘That will make a lot of the news unfortunately.

‘His career as a football player on the pitch was one of the best but unfortunately there are moments like this that do arise and it’s not nice to see that.’

Gary Lineker, hosting the programme, said of England’s one-time nemesis at full-time: ‘There’s a danger of him becoming a laughing stock I’m afraid in many ways.’

Maradona also appeared overcome with emotion after Messi found the net in the first half, with the goal prompting the 57-year-old to thank God.

The occasion all seemed to be a bit too much for him at one stage as he appeared to fall asleep.

‘I’m furious and very upset’: Maradona wants a meeting with Argentina squad after Croatia defeat

A furious Diego Maradona has requested a meeting with the Argentina team ahead of their crunch final World Cup group game against Nigeria.

Argentina were humiliated 3-0 by Croatia on Thursday, leaving them in a very precarious position in their group with just one match remaining.

Lionel Messi and Co currently sit bottom of Group D with just one point, two below Nigeria in second and five adrift of Croatia ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side need to win against Nigeria on Tuesday and hope that Iceland – on the same number of points as Argentina – do not beat Croatia to progress to the last-16 of the World Cup.

And Maradona, who managed Argentina at the 2010 World Cup and was in attendance as they fell to defeat on Thursday, says he would ‘love to hold a meeting’ with the current team and invite former players to inspire the struggling side.

‘I would love to hold a meeting with them, with (Nery) Pumpido, with (Sergio) Goycochea, with (Claudio) Caniggia, with (Pedro) Troglio, even with (Daniel) Passarella if he wants to come, and with (Jorge) Valdano,’ he told Venezuelan TV channel Telesur.

‘It cost us too much to be where we are for Croatia to hit us for three goals and to leave with our arms crossed without putting a foot in. We’re going to defend our honour.

‘I’m furious and very upset inside, because anyone who has worn that shirt can’t see it being trampled like that by a Croatian team that isn’t Germany, that isn’t Brazil, that isn’t Holland or Spain.’

Despite expressing his anger at the squad for their disappointing performances, which also included a 1-1 draw with Iceland, Maradona has aimed most of the blame at the Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia.

Maradona added: ‘But there is a guilty party and the culprit is the president of the AFA. Everyone just accepted it when Sampaoli came in with computers, with drones, with 14 assistants.

‘I think there is a total lack of authority on Tapia’s part.’

Messi’s World Cup dream left in tatters as Croatia humiliate Argentina

Argentina are on the verge of exiting the 2018 world cup after they were thrashed three nil by Croatia. Ante Rebic made the most of a Willy Caballero howler to open the scoring in the 53rd minute before Luka Modric curled in a sensational second goal and Ivan Rakitic rounded off the scoring in injury-time to secure his side’s passage to the knockout stages.

After their opening one all draw with Iceland, Argentina go into their final Group D game with Nigeria with only one point and their hopes of staying in Russia beyond the group stage are hanging by a thread and their fate is no longer in their hands.

Earlier on, Kylian Mbappe’s first World Cup goal was enough to send France into the last 16 of FIFA world cup with a one nil win against Peru in Group C.

The forward tapped home from a deflected Olivier Giroud cross in the 34th minute and became France’s youngest ever goalscorer at a major tournament in the process, overtaking David Trezeguet’s previous record vs Saudi Arabia in 1998.

Peru impressed again with their attacking play particularly in the second half but once again could not find the breakthrough and will exit the competition at the group stages after their final game against Australia next week.

‘We are not candidates’: Messi rules Argentina out of contention for World Cup

Despite swatting aside Haiti and grabbing himself a hat-trick on Tuesday night, Lionel Messi believes Argentina are not contenders to lift the World Cup in Russia this summer.

But while the Barcelona man was quick to talk down their chances, he did concede that the South Americans remain a ‘very good’ team as they eye their first World Cup title since Mexico 1986.

Diego Maradona stole the show at that tournament and the pressure is growing on 30-year-old Messi to deliver for the national team on the biggest stage.

‘I am very grateful to all the people, we always feel the affection of all, not like other times that we received insults,’ Messi, who took his international tally to 64 goals, told reporters.

‘We all go to Russia for the same reason, the World Cup is the dream of us, of the country. We are not candidates but we are very good, training and improving day by day.

‘We have good players and we are getting stronger to fight as an equal with anyone.’

Jorge Sampaoli’s side will wrap up their pre-World Cup preparations against Israel on June 9 before switching attentions to Group D where they face Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria.

World Cup Hopes Remain In The Balance For Messi & Co As Paraguay Holds Argentina

Argentina came from behind to draw with Venezuela on Tuesday but their inability to take what should have been an easy three points means the 2014 losing finalists are still a long way from guaranteeing their place in Russia next year.

The home side had won all six of their previous home qualifiers against Venezuela and were expected to do the same against the team that is bottom of the South American group and without a win in 10 games.

Argentina’s failure to take all three points left them fifth in the standings with two matches remaining, out of the top four spots which bring with them direct qualification for the finals.

Venezuela are well out of the running but got the opening goal just four minutes into the second half.

Jhon Murillo ran onto an incisive through ball and expertly chipped the advancing goalkeeper to give the visitors a surprise lead.

The advantage, though, lasted just four minutes and when Argentina equalized it came from the same left flank where all of their most dangerous attacks originated.

Neither they nor Venezuela created many clear-cut chances and the home side trooped off to the boos of their disgruntled fans.
