Barcelona 1- 3 Real Madrid: Ronaldo scores a screamer before seeing red

Real Madrid will appeal Cristiano Ronaldo’s second yellow card for diving in the Spanish Super Cup first leg at Barcelona, coach Zinedine Zidane confirmed after a 3-1 win over Barcelona.

Ronaldo spent 24 minutes on the pitch after not starting the game at the Nou Camp but still had the biggest impact.

The 32-year-old, who was given a hostile reception by Barca fans as he warmed up before replacing Karim Benzema, hit back moments after Lionel Messi’s equaliser with a brilliant strike into the top corner to put Real 2-1 up in the 80th minute.

The Portuguese threw off his shirt after scoring and provocatively held it up to the crowd and was booked.

Two minutes later he was sent off for trying to win a penalty in a challenge from Samuel Umtiti, and even pushed referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea before leaving the pitch.

‘We played a great game but I am annoyed by Cristiano’s sending off,’ Zidane told a news conference.

‘Perhaps it wasn’t a penalty but the red card is a little harsh. We can’t change it, but we’ll try and make sure he plays on Wednesday.’

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos also leapt to Ronaldo’s defence.

‘I think he was caught off balance and he didn’t dive,’ said the defender. ‘We should try and appeal it. It should be analysed a little more.’

Marco Asensio scored Real’s third with a stunning long-range goal in the 90th minute, giving Madrid a healthy advantage as they seek to win a fourth trophy in four months and earn their first Super Cup since 2012.

‘We fought with 10 players, we believed until the end but it’s only one game, we have the second leg up next,’ added Zidane.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said his side had not deserved to lose 3-1.

‘I don’t have the sensation we were as far away from them as the scoreline suggests,’ he said. ‘They scored three times, but we played well and had our chances.

‘They caught us on the counterattack when it was 1-1 and scored a great goal, and then another one. But it’s not just about getting into the danger zone, it’s about putting your chances away.’

Sergio Araujo Stuns La Liga Leaders With Late Equaliser After Fuming Cristiano Ronaldo Subbed

Cristiano Ronaldo was fuming after being substituted by Zinedine Zidane during Real Madrid’s draw at Las Palmas.

The two-time FIFA world player of the year was surprised to be hooked in the 72nd minute on Saturday night – the first time in his seven-year career he had been taken off in a tactical switch.

Zidane offered his hand to Ronaldo as he trudged off the pitch, which the Portugal forward acknowledged without making eye contact with the Real coach.

Zinedine Zidane offered his hand but Ronaldo did not make eye contact with the Real coach

The Canary Islanders have been the revelation side of the start of the season in Spain and twice they pegged back Zinedine Zidane’s team. The French coach controversially took off Cristiano Ronaldo 18 minutes from time and then watched his side blow their lead.

The 24-year-old Argentine striker Araujo played for Barca B on-loan during the 2012-13 season. He showed greater desire than Real Madrid defenders with his late leveller – slamming into keeper Kiko Casilla’s clearance and then bundling the ball and Madrid’s Nacho over the line.

Real Madrid had taken the lead on 33 minutes and the goal came from an unexpected source.

Reserve centre-back Nacho was in the team at left back for the injured Marcelo and he stormed forward and into the area ignoring the shout from Ronaldo to play the ball inside. Nacho’s shot was saved by Javi Varas but as it looped out back into the six-yard box Marcos Asensio met it with his head to make it 1-0.

Gareth Bale was lively down the right and went close to scoring with a fierce shot in the first half

Madrid were threatening to put the game beyond the home side but on 38 minutes Las Palmas drew level exposing Madrid’s weakeness in defence. They still miss Pepe’s no-nonsense clearances and keeper Casilla offers none of the assured shot-stopping of Keylor Navas. It’s good news for Madrid that the Costan Rican keeper is close to full fitness again.

Ronaldo's shot was blocked but Karim Benzema put away the rebound for the second goal

Las Palmas attacked down the left and when Momo’s cross was headed on by Marco Livaja it dropped to Pedro Tana in the area. Sergio Ramos and Nacho were close but nowhere near close enough and when from Tana made the most of the time and space to hit his shot sweetly, Casilla allowed it to find his far corner.

That sent Madrid back to the drawing board and they toiled without reward at the start of the second half. A mazy run inside the penalty area from Bale finished with Ronaldo scoring but he was obviously offside and the flag was raised.

On 64 minutes Zinedine Zidane put Karim Benzema on for goalscorer Asensio and the Frenchman put Real Madrid in front. Alvaro Morata played the perfect pass through Las Palmas defence and Ronaldo ran on to it. His shot was blocked by Varas but Benzema followed through scoring from the rebound.

It was Ronaldo’s last contribution and he didn’t look very happy at being taken off with 20 minutes left.

The plan this season is that for his own good and for the good of the team he will not play every last minute of every last game but he left the field mumbling to himself, shaking his head as Las Palmas supporters whistled his departure.

Real Madrid Star, Cristiano Ronaldo, Says He Will Be Fit For Final After Injury Scare

Cristiano Ronaldo hobbled out of training just four days before the Champions League final amid concerned looks from team-mates.

According to dailymail.co.uk, Ronaldo went up for the ball with Madrid’s reserve team keeper Kike Casilla and fell down in a heap. When he didn’t get back to his feet he was attended to by several member of Real Madrid’s medical staff and finally hobbled away from the training pitch with ten minutes left of the session.

But Madrid’s talisman played down injury concerns: ‘I had a little scare… but in a couple of days I will be fine,’ Ronaldo said. ‘I’ve had a little problem, but having been the most used player this season that is normal.

‘I think it’s the season where I’ve played the most minutes, and taking out this problem from training I am at my best.’

The clash did not seem serious but as he walked off, he angrily threw down a water bottle and looked less than happy as he headed for the dressing room.

The incident came during a full-bloodied 10-a-side training match on a reduced size pitch.

In an earlier clash Alvaro Arbeloa and Danilo clattered into each other.

Ronaldo Hunts More Goals In Germany

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Champions League’s top scorer this season with 13 goals, can add to his tally and extend his record against German clubs in the knockout stages at Wolfsburg.

The 31-year-old is currently four short of matching his record in a Champions League season ahead of Wednesday’s quarterfinal, first leg, at the German league club with the return next Tuesday at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese star is on a rich run against Bundesliga sides and has found the net in all of the last six knockout ties played against German clubs in the Champions League.

It started back in the 2011/12 semifinals when he bagged a brace against Bayern Munich as the Bavarian giants went on to suffer heartbreak in the final at home to Chelsea.

In the 2012/13 campaign, he netted against Borussia Dortmund as the German side reached the final at Wembley when they lost to Bayern.

But in the 2013/14 campaign, when Real achieved ‘La Decima’, he notched a total of seven goals across the home and away meetings with Schalke, Borussia and Bayern.

Then last season, he claimed three goals in the last-16 tie against Schalke in a 5-4 aggregate win, netting twice in the shock 4-3 defeat in Madrid having also scored when Real won 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

A home Champions League quarterfinal against Ronaldo and Real is a dream tie for the Wolfsburg squad, who are without a win in their last three games.

“You can only be impressed with Cristiano Ronaldo,” said Wolfsburg’s Germany international Julian Draxler.

“Just look at the way he has performed over the years and the goals he has scored.

“Of course, you always follow the progress of a player like him.

“We hope we can keep him at bay as much as possible over the two games.

“But at the end of the day, this is about Wolfsburg versus Real Madrid, not Wolfsburg versus Ronaldo.”
