The Zimbabwe national team‚ currently playing in African World Cup qualifiers‚ slept on the streets outside their hotel in Tunisia on Monday night because of poor facilities and lack of funds.

“Rugby Africa has been made aware of the difficulties encountered by the Zimbabwean Rugby team – the Sables – with regards to their accommodation in Tunisia‚” Rugby Africa said in a statement.

On social media‚ former Zimbabwean Minister for Education‚ Sport‚ Arts and Culture David Coltart confirmed the news‚ saying he had received confirmation from the father of one of the players in the team.

Images of players on the streets with their belongings have also been circulating widely on social media on Tuesday.

Some reports suggest they were asked to pay a 20-euro (R320) visa fee per man at the airport‚ which they couldn’t afford and were held there for 10-hours after the squad’s passports were retained by officials.

In a voice note sent to Capitalk FM‚ Zimbabwe flanker Takudzwa Mandiwanza said the trip had been a ‘shambles’.

“We have not been paid our daily allowances for our duration in Kenya‚ including our match fees that we did not receive. Now we’re in Tunisia‚ we were detained at the airport for close to six hours‚ with no allowances given to us.

“If it wasn’t for the coach buying us sandwiches and a few drinks from his own money‚ we’d be hungry right now. The situation is very frustrating and disheartening.”

Gor CEO Lordvick Aduda says the home side employed unethical means to have the game end in their favor.  Aduda alleges the general attitude of the Esperance fans, players and technical bench was aimed at provoking and harassing their players.

CAF CL: Tunisia’s Esperance Hold Gor Mahia To A Goal-less Draw In Machakos

Gor Mahia yesterday settled for a barren with Esperance of Tunisia in the first leg of the CAF champions’ league first round.

The match was played at Machakos Stadium. Kogallo will live to blame themselves for missing several clear cut chances while the Tunisians will have their goalkeeper Noel Ben Sherifia to thank for pulling crucial saves to keep them in the match.

Kogallo will now go back to drawing board and prepare for the second leg in ten days in Tunis. Gor will need a win to proceed to the next round.

Ultimately whether yesterday’s goal-less draw was good enough for Gor Mahia to make history by reaching the last sixteen group stages of the Caf Champions League will be decided in Tunis.

But this performance in Machakos against Esperance was what many have come to expect week in, week out from K’Ogalo. Dylan Kerr’s charges played without fear and took the game to their more illustrious rivals and the Tunisians will be glad they go back home unscathed.

Kerr approach to the tie was brimming with confidence, ditching his preferred 5-3-2 for an attacking 4-3-3. George Odhiambo, Medie Kagere and Jacques Tuyisenge constantly pestered the Esperance defence manned by Coulibaly Fousany and Khalin Chamam.
