Liverpool have been bundled out of the Carabao Cup, formerly known as as EFL cup after losing two nil to Leicester in the third round.

After a goalless first half, Shinzi Okazaki opened the scoring for the Foxes in 65th minute before Islam Silmani doubled the lead ten minutes later.

In February Liverpool were blown away under the King Power floodlights as Shakespeare made his bow having replaced Claudio Ranieri, and though this victory took a little more time to develop it was a clear margin in the end.

Liverpool dominated the first half but once Jurgen Klopp removed Philippe Coutinho at the interval his team lost their spark and the hosts looked more like the side that went out with feral intent seven months ago.

Shinji Okazaki broke the deadlock midway through the second period, and 12 minutes from time Islam Slimani provided the exclamation mark with a strike that ripped into the roof of the net.

Summer signings Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dominic Solanke both missed good opportunities for the Reds who had made several changes to their squad.

Defeat irritated Klopp, who said he felt 'really, really sick' at Liverpool's defending for the goals. It is a familiar feeling. His side have been breached with ease far too frequently this season.

Remedying that must become a priority for the German if he is to entertain ambitions of winning silverware this season. The Carabao Cup can already be chalked off and while it may not have been a priority this loss makes it four games without a win for Liverpool.

Meanwhile,  Tottenham eased to the fourth round after beating Barnsley one nil thanks to Dele Alli's second half strike at the Wembley Stadium.
