This summer Manchester United completed the record signing of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, re-signing the former Red Devils academy player for £89m.

The 23-year-old Frenchman became the most expensive footballer of all time but had previously been linked to a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Barcelona’s director of sporting relations Albert Soler this week claimed they passed up on the opportunity to sign Paul Pogba and explained why.

“Last year we reached a deal with Juventus for us to have a priority option when they sold Pogba,” he said.

“This summer we decided that there were players that suited us better on a sporting level.

“The idea of the board was that nobody would be able to get ahead of us in the market. It allowed us to have options.”
