Death Toll From Moi Girls Fire Tragedy Rises To 10

A student injured in the Moi Girls' School fire died in hospital on Thursday.

This brings to 10, the number of students who died following the September 2 tragedy.

The student died at about 5am, said Paul Masai, the National Disaster Management Unit communications director.

Masai did not name the student but said her parents were notified and identified the body.

"NDMU sends condolences to family and friends. The bereaved family is planning the funeral...the burial date will be announced," he said on a statement.

On the night of September 2, fire broke out at the upper floor of the school's Kabarnet dormitory at around 2am.

Seven girls died at the scene while two succumbed while being treated. Ten others were hospitalised.

A student was arrested and arraigned for causing the fire after Education CS Fred Matiang'i said it was an act of arson.

The case against the 14-year old has not been included.
