Tension is high following a land conflict between two clans in Tot, Marakwet East subcounty.

The land conflict erupted on Thursday morning leading to the killing of one man, while several others were injured. The man was shot dead after members of Kapsiren and Kapshoi clans engaged in a shoot out over a disputed land boundary near Tot trading center.

Marakwet East subcounty deputy county commissioner Hussein Alaso said youth from the two clans fought in the disputed land on Thursday morning before security officers rushed to the scene to restore peace. Speaking to the press after visiting the area, Alaso said youth from the two clans had defied an order not to step on the disputed land until when the dispute has been resolved.

“The youth had been warned to keep off the land but armed youths from one of the clans were seen on the land in the morning, forcing youth from the other clan to chase them away. That’s when a quarrel ensued, leading the shoot out.” Hussein said. Reports indicated that the youth, who were armed with AK47 rifles, bows and arrows, fought for at least one hour before they were dispersed by regular and administration police officers from Tot police station.
