Samuel Mushai yesterday won Kenya’s first gold medal in the Paralympics games after securing victory in the men’s 5000m T11 final.

Mushai who was guided by James Boit produced a brilliant kick in the final 200m to win the race in a personal best time of fifteen minutes and sixteen seconds.

Coming in at number two was Odiar Santos of Brazil while Wilson Bii guided by Bernard Korir finished third to settle for bronze medal. Eric Sang who had initially finished in third place was disqualified for lane violation.

Meanwhile, Henry Mwendo cruised to the semi finals of the men’s 400m T12 after finishing first in heat four.

In other news, Belarus team carried Russia’s flag as well as their own at the Paralympic Games opening ceremony, in a show of support for their near-neighbours, who were banned from the competition in Rio de Janeiro.

The head of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) Vladimir Lukin told the TASS news agency that he was grateful for the gesture at the ceremony on Wednesday night. “I can only thank our colleague from Belarus,” Lukin said.

Russia were excluded from the event by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) because of a state-sponsored sports doping programme.
