Rooney: My son asked for a shirt with Jamie Vardy on the back (VIDEO)

Has Wayne Rooney's first born son, Kai, sensed change in the air?. Kai Rooney reportedly asked his dad to get him a Jamie Vardy kit,  England's captain rather amusingly revealed on television, and understandably so given the season Leicester’s lightning-quick forward has so far enjoyed.

At Wembley, Vardy wore the No 10 shirt Rooney will still hope to fill in France this summer, producing arguably England’s finest performance against the Dutch and scoring yet another goal in a 1-2 home defeat, to add further fuel to a debate that was ignited by that defeat of Germany in Berlin last weekend.

Vardy’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable, and he is now part of a young England squad that can take heart from wins against France and Germany while knowing there is work to be done, after losing in the manner they did against Danny Blind’s team. Rooney argued that his colleagues did not deserve to lose, but Hodgson will be more realistic.

Rooney has been England’s finest forward for more than 12 years, but with his career entering a period of gentle decline Hodgson has to give serious thought to the merits of others, not least when the Manchester United captain has yet to return from a knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines since mid-February.

The England skipper spoke of being back ‘in full training in the next week or 10 days’ but it sounded a little optimistic. Only if ‘everything goes to plan’, he also stressed.

Even so, credit to Rooney for speaking with such enthusiasm about the efforts of his international colleagues and for revealing himself the fierce competitor he remains.
