Take James Rodriguez as a recent example. The Colombian was an exciting young player at Monaco before the last World Cup. Then he won the Golden Boot in Brazil and got a move to Real Madrid.
While we’re sure bigger and better things would have come James’s way at some point, the strong World Cup performance raised his profile in a way that playing for Monaco couldn’t. Mind you, that’s Ligue 1. La Liga is a much bigger deal.
Yet the same thing is happening to Antoine Griezmann.
Antoine Griezmann’s ascent: Not the move to Real Madrid bit – he only recently extended his deal with Atletico – but now people are talking about him as on par with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They’re putting him ahead of Gareth Bale, Neymar, and Luis Suarez. Why now?
Well, because of his six goals at the European Championships. Two came against Germany but four of those were plundered versus Iceland and Ireland. Is this worthy of such acclaim? How much do we even really know about this potential world beater?
