Thierry Henry on the shortlist of candidates for Aston Villa manager

Thierry Henry will be on a shortlist of candidates to replace Steve Bruce as Aston Villa manager should the club's new owners decide a change is required.

Villa announced on Friday that Egyptian Nassef Sawiris, whose wealth measures nearly £5billion, and business partner Wes Edens, co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, would inject 'significant investment' into the Championship side.

The pair are understood to have acquired 55 per cent of the club from former owner Tony Xia and now have the capacity to call the shots, bringing scrutiny on Bruce's position.

Sportsmail understands Sawiris and Edens are weighing up an approach for their own man and have identified Arsenal legend Henry as a potential candidate to replace Bruce.

Sources have also indicated however that Bruce may well continue into the new campaign, after nearly taking the club into the Premier League while managing a budget.

The attraction of the Frenchman is clear though. He played a key role in Roberto Martinez's backroom staff in Belgium's run to a third-placed finish at the World Cup and is keen to find a top job as he looks to take his first steps in senior management.

Indeed, Henry this week revealed on Twitter that he would be stepping down from his role as a Sky Sports pundit to focus on his desire to become a boss.

Whether the Villa job would prove interesting to the 40-year-old remains to be seen and much depends on the level of squad investment Edens and Sawiris would be prepared to make.
