Things That Keep Gospel Singer Janet Otieno Going

Janet Otieno is a renowned gospel artiste in Kenya mainly for her first song ‘Napokea kwako’ featuring Christina Shusho.

When she started singing she was uncertain how people would react to her songs until this particular one became a hit in East Africa. She has gone on to be a solo artiste with a couple of more songs out like Heshima, Uniongeze and many more.

Speaking to Massawe Japanni on Radio Jambo during the  Bustani la MJ show here is what she described as her highest point.

“When I started singing; sikujua vile itakuwa, vile watu watanipokea sikujua vile Mungu atanipeleka lakini wakati nilianza kuimba watu walinipokea vizuri na ilileta heshima fulani na nikashukuru mungu.”

She says this was her breakthrough and launching pad and it is amazing that this song still blesses a lot of people.

On the other side she says she is a strong woman and nothing puts her down.

“Nafikiri Mungu ananipenda labda sijakutana na kitu inaniweka chini but life ni kung’ang’ana, tunang’ang’ana maisha na hakuna kitu ile unaweza sema ni roller coaster but all in all sijafika pale mpaka nagive up.”

She appreciates Team J.O who supports her and stands with her through her musical journey saying she couldn’t do it without them as they stand with her in prayers and creating time to tweet and promote her work.

“kuna team  Janet Otieno wananiita J.O pale nje mahali popote wako nawaambia thank you so much. Huduma hii bila watu wanakusupport huwezi ifanya pekee yako. Mungu awabariki sana. Nawapenda kabisa.”

To those aspiring musicians she said there is no age limit since she started singing while she was already a mother of three telling people to get into the industry with an open mind aiming to serve the Lord.

“Kwa vijana chipukizi ambao wanataka kuaanza kuimba usikuje kuimba ukiwa unataka kuimba ile upate pesa au uwe famous au kuwa kama mtu Fulani. Kuja na lengo moja la kumfanyia mungu kazi na kuimba tu nyimbo za kuinua watu mioyo.”

Her punchline “shughulika na Mambo ya Mungu tu yeye ashughulike na yako.”
