A school principal was among 15 people arraigned on Tuesday over exam malpractices.

Christopher Otieno and 14 others, among them exam officials, were on Monday arrested in Kisii county on charges of illegal possession of a Chemistry paper.

Among the exam officials arrested were Irene Kivunja, Judith Nyabeki, Alex Ziko Akuma, Christopher Ogora, and Marori Edwin

The police made the arrests following investigations which revealed that Monianku secondary school had hired five outsiders to facilitate the illegal distribution of KCSE papers.

Gucha South sub-county police boss Vincent Kitili said the five were arrested shortly after concluding the day's paper in a house some metres from the private school.

Senior Resident Magistrate Margaret Nafula ruled that the 15 be remanded for five more days for police to conclude investigations.

The accused will be remanded at the Nyamarambe police station until November 12 when the case will be mentioned.

The case comes on the day Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed revealed the government has been monitoring phones of exam officials to curb cheating.

“The phones of examination centre managers and invigilators are being monitored to ensure they don’t tamper with the examinations. Anyone who tries to do so will be arrested and charged,” the CS said in Murang’a county.

She said any attempts to contaminate the exam process will be detected and warned those intending to interfere with the process that they will be tracked down and arrested.
