Chinese Fined Sh1Million For Possession Of Hippopotamus Teeth

A Chinese national has been ordered to pay a Sh1million fine or serve five years in jail after he pleaded guilty to the charge of being in illegal possession of government trophies.

Zhang Qinwen was arraigned before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Allan Sitati charged that on May 8th, this year at Lemek area in Narok South Sub County of Narok County, he was found in possession of three pieces of hippopotamus teeth weighing three kilogrammes, worth Sh60, 000 without a permit from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in contravention of the Wildlife Conservation Act of 2013.

The court was told the Chinese national, jointly with others not before the court, was found transporting the trophies in the boot of his car and is suspected to have been poached from a conservancy in the area.

The wildlife rangers acting on a tip-off from the members of the public stopped the vehicle that was being driven by the accused at Lemek trading centre and recovered the illegal cargo.

The accused had earlier denied the charges but changed his plea and paid the fine of Sh1Million.

He will now be deported after paying the fine.
