The Nairobi City Mortuary is set for a KES 150 million upgrade after the county budget committee set aside funds for its rehabilitation.

The budget committee also set aside KES 450 million and KES 250 million for the upgrading of Pumwani Maternity Hospital and Mutuini Hospital respectively.

A city mortuary official the plans to upgrade the facility saying that the mortuary was in a deplorable state and the money will be used to renovate some structures.

"We are glad we received 10 coolers but we need four more. We need to refurbish our water tank and roof; the floor needs a terrazzo, and even the public toilet has no doors," the official told The STAR.

The official said the parking area also needs to be rehabilitated to accommodate more cars.

The staffer also added that the mortuary's incinerator and back-up generator are not working and staff do not receive money for milk in time.

The morgue attendants take lots of milk to wash away the chemicals that get into in their bodies.

The official said the county should increase morgue attendants salaries as they earn KES 32 000 a month.
