Nyambene MCA's furious over Agriculture CS Kiunjuri remarks about miraa

Nyambene MCAs are furious with remarks by Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri that Sh.2 Billion given to cushion Miraa farmers be used to purchase Avacado and Macadamia seedling to enable Miraa farmers diversify from Miraa farming.

Nyambene MCAs led by their spokesperson David Kaithia (Akithi) said they are angered by Kiunjuri remarks.

Kiunjuri made the remarks on Friday September 28,2018 when he attended Meru dairy farmers field day at Gitoro Show ground, North Imenti constituency , Meru county.

Kiunjuri said he had spoken with Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi and discussed and agreed that the Sh.2 billion meant to cushion Miraa will be used to buy Miraa and Avacado seedlings.

"We know it was not the plan by the government when the funds were given by President Uhuru Kenyatta. We know farmers were not consulted in the process," Kaithia said.

He said CS Kiunjuris should come clean on the issue or they will convene a meeting with all elected leaders in Nyambene and Miraa within to weeks to chart the way forward.

They spoke at Gatimene Hotel on Tuesday October 9,2018 during a press briefing.

About 10 MCAs from the Miraa growing region held a press briefing and expressed their anger in CS Mwangi Kiunjuri remarks that Sh.2 billion given by government to cushion Miraa farmers be used to buy avacado and Macadamia.

Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi has distanced himself from the claims that he wants Miraa farmers to uproot their crop in favour of Macadamia nuts and Avocado.

On Friday he said he only advised farmers to inter-crop so that they earn from the nuts and the avocados.

Kiraitu asked Trade and Industrialisation CS Peter Munya to help get a market Miraa.

Kimathi Ithaibua (Kiegoi) said they are not aware of the meeting that took place between CS Mwangi Kinjuri and governor Kiraitu and therefore what the discussed was not for benefit of Miraa farmers.

Kimathi said since formation of the Miraa task force the Miraa farmers are yet to know the recommendations the task force made.

"We will not accept even a single penny to be used to purchase Macadamia and Avacado," Kimathi said.

He said CS Kiunjuri and governor Kiraitu should call a meeting with Miraa farmers and declare publicly what the statement meant.

Two week ago East Africa Legislative Assembly member Mpuru Aburi said the thousands of miraa farmers in Nyambene region are yet to get a penny of the funds.

Nominated mca Janerose Mati said Miraa income cannot be compared to Macadamia and Avacado.

She said instead Miraa can be value added.

Jediel Mutura (Ntunene) said President Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto gave out Sh.1 billion in 2016.

and another Sh.1 billion in 2017 after Miraa was made a cash crop.

He said they only read about Miraa Task Force on Implementation Committee recommendations in newspapers.

"The task force recommendations which I read in the newspapers are out of touch with reality on ground," Mutura said.

Mutura said there are cartels who want to steal the money allocated to cushion Miraa farmers after the UK ban.
