Addressing a press conference at the palatial home of the tycoon in Nairobi’s Muthaiga estate, Raila said he was detained in a room when the police were searching for guns. They found one M4 rifle.
“At one point they barred me from leaving, saying it was a scene of crime. I was adamant they were breaking the law. Their commander said he was no longer allowed to talk to me. After a while they said I should leave. I refused,” said Raila, who stayed overnight.
The former Prime Minister said Wanjigi’s lawyer and Siaya Senator James Orengo was barred from accessing the home. Raila said he was allowed in by sheer luck.
He went into one of the bedrooms and found an officer searching. Raila showed him a court order and he temporarily stopped the search. They walked down the stairs together.
They found one of the police bosses standing outside. Raila tried to persuade him to allow Orengo and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama to get in. The police boss refused.
Raila walked back to the room and spoke to the businessman’s father, Maina Wanjigi. He is a former Cabinet minister.
After a brief chat, Raila went into one of the rooms with one of the lawyers. But a policeman walked in and ordered them to leave the house. He said they have found weapons and the place was a crime scene.
“The lawyer told told him it can only become a scene of crime if you have found something illegal,” said the NASA boss.
Raila told how he tried to stop the destruction of the house during the search.
“There was severe damage. The family was using candles because the electricity was disconnected,” he said.
The trend of breaking laws started after the Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory on September 1, Raila said.
”Jimmy is no stranger to Uhuru. The weapons found in the Malindi house were found in the sea in 2012 . This is personal vendetta.”
