Nakuru County government will from next week hire over 300 nurses on contract in a bid to replace the ones that are currently on strike.

With the strike entering the fourth month, the county said that it would not seat back and watch as patients mainly in rural areas continue to suffer.

This came as Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui issued a warning to the striking nurses saying that they should return to their workplace or face the sack.

He said that a task force he formed was addressing the grievances of the nurses and the working conditions in the county adding that its recommendations would be implemented.

Speaking to the press after visiting Naivasha sub-county hospital, Kinyanjui said that the process of hiring the nurses had kicked off.

He admitted that the ongoing strike had taken its toll on health services adding that his government was ready to talk to the nurses and their leaders.

“We shall be advertising for the positions of 300 nurses in the county in the coming days as we continue to engage those on strike in negotiations,” he said.
