The world's last northern male white rhino has died at 45-years. Sudan, the male white rhino was being taken care of by Ol Pejeta conservancy along side two other last northern female white rhinos.

"It is with great sadness that Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Dvůr Králové Zoo announce that Sudan, the world's last male northern white rhino, age 45, died at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya on March 19, 2018," Ol Pejeta said in a statement.

At the end of 2017, Sudan had been suffering from an infection in his right hind leg, and though his condition had since improved, the infection returned, and Sudan spent two weeks in his pen where he was being treated from a deep wound on his right hind leg.

According to Wikipedia, In December 2009, Sudan was moved from the Dvůr Králové Zoo (Czech Republic) to the Ol Pejeta conservancy  for a "Last Chance To Survive" breeding program.

Attempts of getting Sudan to mate naturally failed.

Northern White Rhinos are guarded twenty four hours a day at the Conservancy to protect them from poaching, which is a major problem for rhinos. The protection includes horn-imbibed transmitters, watchtowers, fences, drones, guard dogs, and trained armed guards around the clock.

The conservancy said Sudan during his final years came back to Africa and stole the heart of many with his dignity and strength.

"We on Ol Pejeta are all saddened by Sudan’s death. He was a great ambassador for his species and will be remembered for the work he did to raise awareness globally of the plight facing not only rhinos but also the many thousands of other species facing extinction."
