Women Senators have raised concern over increasing cases of violence against young women and young girls in the country.
The Senators however said the violence was also affecting men and young boys in society.

The Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) members met in Eldoret and urged the police and the DPP to ensure all those perpetrating murder and violence against women are arrested and prosecuted.

Chairperson of the association Mary Seneta Yiane and Ten other senators said the country was recording an increase in cases of murder, rape, defilement and attacks against women.

They cited the recent murders of Sharon Atieno, Merbel Kaplon and Monica Kimani as a worrying trend of gender based violence.

"We know many cases go unreported and the violence also affects men and young boys. We condemn the violence and call for restraint in society", said Senator Alice Milgo.

Christine Zawadi who is a nominated Senator said the entire society was to blame for the violence and time had come for Kenyans to rethink about having a morally just society free from such violence.

She said courts must also play their role of meting out harsh punishment against those perpetrating such violence.

"Many suspects are going free and we urge our judiciary to help us fight the violence against women,"said Zawadi.

The Senators said they would team up with other groups to sensitize society on the need to avoid the violence and instead sort out disputes through dialogue and counseling.

Senator Yiane said young girls should be careful on the friendship they keep and avoid falling into traps of dangerous relationships because of money and drugs.

"Parent should take up their roles in guiding and counseling girls to be careful on the relationships they engage in to avoid falling into dangerous hands", said Yiane.

Zawadi said they were also against those seeking legalization of dangerous drugs like bhang which were also to blame for the increased violence.

She said young children did not deserve to die in such cases of violence bacause they were innocent and had no capacity to offend anyone.

The Senators said they would seek to strengthen the legal framework against violence in society.
