Meanwhile, Police in Naivasha have assured visitors and residents of their security a day after The US Embassy issued a terror alert.

While heightening their patrols in and around the town, key installations and hotels, the security officers called for support from members of the public.

This came as political leaders, hoteliers and religious leaders called on area residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious people in the town.

On Monday, the Embassy identified Nairobi, Naivasha, Nanyuki and Coastal towns as possible targets for the terrorists and advised residents to be on high alert.

A senior police officer who declined to be named said that since the festive season they had been alert and they had increased their intelligence collection.

“Even before the warning by the US government our officers were on high alert and soon we are launching another major crackdown targeting aliens,” said the officer.

Naivasha sub-county commissioner Jim Njoka said that they were not taking the alert lightly adding that all intelligence and security forces had been activated.

Njoka called on area residents to work with security officers in identifying any suspicious persons in the town.

“Since the December holidays our security officers have been on high alert and this will continue all around the town and even on major installations,” he said.

The chairman Naivasha Hoteliers Association Peter Mehta said that they had also heightened their security in and around the hotels with all visitors subjected to checks.

Mehta who is also the CEO of Crayfish hotel added that they were working closely with security officers following the alert.

“The US alert will definitely affect our businesses but we are working with security agents so that Naivasha does not become terrorists’ target,” he said.

On his part, Lakeview MCA Karanja Mburu in a statement thanked the US government for providing the country with the important information.

Karanja called for heightened vigilance in shopping malls, hotels and places of worship to deter any planned attack.

“Am appealing to residents of this town to be also on high alert and inform police through members of Nyumba Kumi of any persons with ulterior motive,” he said.

While assuring visitors of their safety, the MCA termed Naivasha as one of the fastest growing towns in the country in terms of hospitality industry.

Last week, police manning a roadblock in Gilgil along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway arrested three aliens who did not have any identification while en route from Kampala to Nairobi.
