Photos: Losses after fire guts Gikomba market stalls

Property of unknown value was destroyed on Sunday morning after a fire razed stalls at Nairobi's Gikomba market.

An eyewitness said the fire started at around 7am and is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault.

Nairobi county firefighters arrived 30 minutes after an alarm was sounded and put off the flames.

Sonko rescue team also joined them and contained the fire before it spread to other sections of the market.

Clothes and shoes vendors were the most affected.

Residents complained that electricity connections at the market are substandard.

The market has a history of fires which have cost traders losses amounting to millions of shillings.
