Two IEBC officials expected in court for 'altering documents'

Two IEBC officials are this morning expected in court to face various charges after they were found altering documents of results of the just concluded polls at a tallying center in Nairobi.

Officials said 16 ballot boxes with presidential results were destroyed and materials altered in the incident on Saturday.

The officials, a deputy presiding officer and a clerk had gone to Embakasi Girls where election materials are kept and accessed the store where they obtained the ballots and other materials.

They told police manning the store they had been sent by IEBC to get some needed materials to help in working on a case that has been filed in court.

The officers demanded a court order to allow them in but the officials said they were IEBC officials and did not require such orders when they were arrested. Police say they will face various charges.

This comes in the wake of revelation 24 IEBC officials are among 85 individuals facing prosecution over election-related offences.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko said Friday he was pursuing 70 criminal cases stemming from the August 8 General Elections. The others are non-IEBC officials while two are politicians.

The DPP said the offences range from bribery, failure to perform official duty, illegal possession of ballot papers, impersonation and murder were kept as exhibits.
